Shortly before her death in an automobile accident Nov. 21, chemistry major Mariko Furukawa '06 was one of 25 scholars selected nationwide as a 2004 Merck-AAAS Research Scholar. During the summer of 2003, she worked with Drs. Marc Harris and Walter Patton, both assistant professors of chemistry, on a research project involving the synthesis of tunable wavelength ruthenium polypyridine tags for the fluorescent detection of proteins. She was to present her work in February at the 2004 AAAS National Meeting in held in Seattle, Wash.

それは１１月２１日の自動車事故で亡くなる直前でした。２００６年度卒業予定・化学専攻学生・古川真梨子さんは２００４年度メルクAAAS研究従事学生（a 2004 Merck-AAAS Research Scholar）として全米から２５名の一人に選ばれました。２００３年夏の期間、化学の助教授であるMarc Harris 及び Walter Patton 両博士と一緒に"the synthesis of tunable wavelength ruthenium polypyridine tags for the fluorescent detection of proteins"という研究課題のプロジェクトに取り組んでいました。彼女は２００４年２月ワシントン州シアトルで開催される AAAS（The American Association for the Advancement of Science）学会に成果を発表することになっていました。 （実際、共同研究仲間の Amy Smith によって発表されました。）
